As a science it has been known for the past six millennia, since the ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian civilizations. It was formerly known as hydrotherapy. For the Chinese and Indians, the benefits of aromatic oils were know some 3,000 years ago.
Aromatic oil is said to comprise oil extracts from every part of a plant, flowers, fruits, tree trunks, grass, and seeds of all varieties. In general, they share a common quality of bringing a balance to body and mind, while warding off illnesses. But they are also distinguished by their forte. Some, for instance, provide a source of warmth, freshness, joviality, and lower feelings of anxiety.

The application of aromatic oil, therefore, varies, but sniffing and massaging are the most popular methods as man has an amazing ability to identify some 10,000 scents. By inhaling aromatic oil, the sense of smell captures the pleasant aroma and transmits it to the mind and emotional senses to bring about relaxation.
Nonetheless, it is believed that massage offers the most effective alternative to capitalize on aromatic oils as the tiny molecules of oils penetrate our blood circulation, intially to all parts of the body before reaching the brain . In general, an effective course of massage, using aromatic oils. takes between 20 and 180 minutes. On average, however, a 90-minute massage should suffice.
Aromatic oils are also used to relex muscles. This entails mixing one or more varieties of aromatic oil with massage oil. If a bathtub is used, you can mix aromatic oil with vegetable oil before pouring the mixture into a tubful of warm water.
